Half pub, half hardware shop — all Dingle
Walk in the front door of Foxy John's on Main Street and you've a choice to make: the bar on your left, or the shelves of hardware on your right. It has been that way since 1899 — a proper Dingle pub with a snug by the door, a back room warmed by a fire, original stone walls and a courtyard out the back, sharing its roof with a working hardware shop and bike hire.
The Guinness is the thing people write home about, the whiskey shelf rewards a slow evening, and when the music starts the musicians stand among the nails and tape. It has been filmed by Great Big Story, inscribed in the European Bar Guide in 2021 and called "no purer drinking spot on Earth" by the Scoundrel's Field Guide — and the hardware counter is still a working shop.
Good to know
- Drinks only — there's no kitchen, so eat before you come
- Bike hire from €15 a day; staff know the routes and have been known to collect a bike when a rider's legs gave out
- Dog-friendly — and there's often a sheepdog looking for a game of fetch
